Retailers offered funding

Shopping bagTwenty two local councils and 10 business and trader associations will be offered grants for a total of 36 projects under round two of the Victorian Coalition Government’s Streetlife program.

The $6 million program is a Victorian Government initiative aimed at providing targeted support to independent retail businesses in local shopping precincts throughout the state.

Under the four year initiative, councils and business and trader associations are eligible for funding to invest in new projects to assist small retail businesses with skills development and business planning.

Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher said the funding would support specific projects to revitalise shopfront trading activity in local business districts.

“Streetlife, is a four year program that supports Victorian businesses through the provision of grants to develop targeted projects to improve the competitiveness and economic outcomes of their local shopping precincts,” Asher said.

“By working hand in hand with their local Councils and trader groups, small retailers will have the opportunity to develop their business and marketing strategies, gain new skills, and improve their online and social media capabilities.”

Asher said Victoria’s retail sector is the state’s second largest employer and a key economic driver.

“The Coalition Government’s Streetlife program recognises that local retailers have experienced a number of challenges over recent years, including a tough local climate, online retailing and restrained consumer spending,” Asher said.

Thirty two local councils and business and trader associations were offered grants under round one of the program, with many projects now reaching their conclusion. It is anticipated that the round three of Streetlife will open early in 2014.
