Online Retailer expo nears

Savvy online Australian retailers are overwhelmingly embracing mobile functionality as part of their increasing focus on offering customers flexible shopping options, according to joint new research by Online Retailer and Forrester Research.

According to the research, in 2010 just 16 per cent of online retail professionals said their business was selling through a mobile touchpoint. By 2012, that figure had rocketed to 55 per cent.

Andrew Jones, Online Retailer event manager, said this marks a promising trend for retailers and consumers.

“The majority of Australian online retailers should be commended for already being ahead of the curve in meeting the needs of customers and this push to optimise the shopping experience across mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets is no exception. However with the fast moving pace of this industry, retailers must continue to adopt the latest technology like mobile web optimisation to remain on the front foot.

“With recent Forrester Research data showing e-commerce continuing to achieve exponential growth and online retail in Australia set to reach $33 billion in 2015 from $16.9 billion in 2009, we would certainly expect this trend to continue with strength and vigour.”

The trend towards mobile optimisation and online retail as a force in the Australian retail landscape will be a focus at the Online Retailer Conference and E-Commerce Expo, where Steven Noble, senior e-business analyst with Forrester Research will reveal the complete research findings.
