Coles opens new-gen local supermarket on Sydney’s North Shore

E-commerce sales predictably rose during the quarter.

Coles has launched a new-generation supermarket, Coles Local Chatswood, on Sydney’s North Shore, introducing multiple sustainability features.

Coles Local Chatswood provides an Ecostore refill station, where customers can refill shampoos, conditioners, body washes, and laundry liquids with recycled bottles. Launched in New Zealand with more than 80 stations, this is the first time Ecostore has installed a refill station in an Australian supermarket.

More than 200 plant-based food products are available at Coles Local Chatswood. The supermarket also features a pick-and-mix bar just for dogs and a range of frozen doggie ice cream.

Coles Local Chatswood houses a dedicated aisle displaying what it claims to be the largest Asian range in the country with more than 600 products from popular brands, including Samyang, Lotte and Haitai.

“Coles Local Chatswood is a brand-new neighbourhood supermarket destination with new products sourced from 35 small Sydney suppliers, and innovative features that customers may not have seen before,” said Thinus Keeve, chief sustainability, property and export officer at Coles.

“As we make progress on our mission to be Australia’s most sustainable supermarket, we’re increasingly looking at new and inventive ways to reduce packaging on certain products.”

The launch is part of a Coles Local format expansion plan in the city, following the launch of the concept in Rose Bay last May. The company aims to open a new Coles Local store in Manly later this year.
