Grocery bar pops up

epicerieScotch whisky company, Ballantine’s, will open a new bar concept in September in France following a competition asking customers to create their own dream bar.

Ballantine’s launched The Bar Project in January and received more than 100 submissions for creative bar concepts.

The whisky company named L’Epicerie, a grocery-themed bar designed by Abderrahim El Afsar, as the winner, and will launch the idea as a pop up later this year at Parisian club, Le Chacha.

L’Epicerie, is modelled on a traditional Moroccan night market, and will feature shelves of fruits, spices, and fresh herbs.

Visitors will be able to select their own fresh ingredients from the shelves to form the base of their cocktail.

“The Bar Project has been a hugely successful pilot initiative for Ballantine’s in France, and we were pleased to see such high quality entries from across the country,” Peter Moore, global brand director for Ballantine’s, said.

Moore said that after a successful trial in France, the concept has potential to be rolled out to other markets.
