Inside Retail presents the Australian Retail Index. The index gives a quick overview of retail statistics in four key categories; fashion and accessories, furniture and homewares, sporting and recreational, and other. Key retail statistics are shown weekly, with yearly comparisons available. Retailers across the country have experienced a tough week with a downturn in sales growth of 11.37 per cent. This comes on the back of six weeks of reasonably consistent positive results in overall sales, a
and is the sharpest single week decrease since mid-July 2015.
Interestingly, the Index shows that the same week in 2014 saw a similar decrease of 7.46 per cent.
The largest contributor to the loss was the fashion and accessories sector which dropped by over 20 per cent in a single week, a massive correction considering the 20 per cent growth seen the week before.
This sector is traditionally a roller coaster ride of results, so we have come to expect this type of movement in the fashion sector. All other sectors behaved as expected given the result from the same week in 2014.
Retailers will be hoping sales growth lifts again in the coming weeks.
