Online grocer, Butler & Bentley, says it’s discovered a niche in the online space – seafood. Launched late last year, the Sydney-based e-tailer says it’s seen a surprising boom come from its specialty meat sections and more surprisingly, seafood. “I don’t think there are as many seafood [retailers] delivering in the online space,” says Nick Biasotto, co-founder of Butler & Bentley. Butler & Bentley is the brainchild of Biasotto and business partner, Anthony Parisi.
Eight years ago we had the idea to create a large grocer, pre-Thomas Dux and Harris Farm. We had a party and trying to get all the products together beforehand from the grocer, fish market, and specialty butcher, took nearly a whole day, so the idea really spawned from a combination of the two.”
Biasotto describes Butler & Bentley as an online David Jones food hall, but without the hefty price tag.
“You have Coles and Woolworths online and Aussie Farmers Direct who are the majors in the online food space, but customers go to Coles and Woolworths to get their dry goods and then get their fresh food and meats from us.”
Butler & Bentley delivers to the Sydney metropolitan area 48 hours after orders are processed.
“It’s like Coles and Woolworths online – you place your order, and select a two hour timeslot to be delivered. We just deliver to the Sydney metropolitan area.”
Biasotto says the site’s target market is predominantly females, particularly inner city dwellers and stay at home mums.
Despite requests to launch interstate, the company has no immediate plans to expand outside of Sydney.
“We’re constantly getting people asking us if we’re going to deliver, particularly from Melbourne. We’ve also had requests from Adelaide and Western Auatralia, and we’ve even had a couple of requests from overseas,” Biasotto said.
“We don’t have plans in the immediate future, but expanding outside of Sydney is something that we would love to consider.”
