Apple Pay arrives in Australia

Amex Apple PayFrom today, American Express cardholders in Australia can pay for items with their iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad and Apple Watch.

Shoppers with an American Express issued card can use Apple Pay at participating stores where contactless American Express payments are currently accepted.

American Express VP consumer marketing ANZ, Dean Chadwick, says Apple Pay will offer convenience for personal, small business and corporate card members.

“At American Express we are focused on giving our customers innovative, convenient and secure ways to pay. With Australians leading the world in the adoption of contactless payments, we are proud to now offer the convenience and security of Apple Pay to our customers,” said Chadwick.

Emily Roberts, American Express vice president global merchant services ANZ, says payment innovations like Apple Pay provide merchants with a range of benefits.

“The introduction and rapid adoption of contactless technology has helped satisfy shoppers’ desire for speed and convenience as well as simplified the payment process for businesses. American Express is able to build on this innovation with the introduction of Apple Pay for our Card Members,” Roberts said.

Online payments provider eWay, already accepts contactless American Express payments and will allow e-commerce merchants to use Apple Pay.

Kogan.com, Brands Exclusive and The Home are among a host of online brands that will accept Apple Pay within their brand apps. Currently, eWay services 21,000 online stores and processes a quarter of all online spend in Australia. The inclusion of Apple Pay will allow retailers to offer one-touch mobile payments, within apps or in-person using eWay’s SmartPOS mobile payments device.

“We are proud to offer Apple Pay to merchants. Our goal has always been to ensure Australian merchants are able to offer the most innovative, seamless payment solutions to their customers,” said founder and CEO of eWay, Matt Bullock.

Bullock says when shopping online using apps that accept Apple Pay, it is as simple as the touch of a finger with touch ID, removing the need to manually fill out lengthy account forms or repeatedly type in shipping and billing information. “After 17 years in e-commerce payments we know what Aussie merchants need to be able to grow. Offering Apple Pay with our SmartPOS devices will undoubtedly help merchants improve the payments experience for their customers and in turn, increase their revenue.”
