Australian premium luxury skincare brand Aesop is expanding its presence into Mainland China with its first store to open in Shanghai, it has announced on social media.

The store will open on the corner of Dongping Road, which has a lot of historical heritage and integrates the diverse styles of Shanghai style, the company said.

However, Aesop has not yet disclosed the exact opening date. The brand has operated on Tmall Global since 2018.

The Mainland China launch, previously scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of last year, was plotted last year by Natura & Co, Aesop’s Brazilian-headquartered parent company, as part of its efforts to enter the world’s second-largest beauty market. The delay is assumed to be due to the recent lockdowns in the country. Natura & Co’s China expansion plan also includes launching The Body Shop’s first store in China this year, after withdrawing from the market in 2014.

Founded in 1987 in Melbourne, Aesop has since expanded into 28 markets, operating about 269 stores each of which features its unique design. The brand added 25 stores and nine department store counters last year, including in Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei and South Korea.
