Young Retailer crowned

DSC_0588Joanna Zurzolo, 25, store manager at Target, Sefton Park in Adelaide, is the National Retail Association’s 2014 Young Retailer of the Year.

Zurzolo took top spot ahead of 25 finalists from around the country, in a four stage judging process, to bring home the coveted industry award.

As the 2014 NRA Young Retailer of the Year, Zurzolo has won a place on Westfield’s 2015 World Retail Study Tour, where over two whirlwind weeks she will be immersed in the very best retail has to offer, alongside a number of retail executives seeking the latest trends and management techniques. It’s a prize worth more than $20,000.

After missing out on the award in 2013, Zurzolo said her win this year was a case of second time lucky.

“My main motivation throughout the intense judging process was my desire to be a positive role model for my nine year-old, younger sister,” she said.

“I’ve shown her, and other ambitious young retailers that even if you get knocked back once, great success can be achieved from never giving up and by really being passionate about what you do.

“My aspirations in retail have no limit. I’ll continue seeking opportunities that will enable me to challenge myself, and develop my skills as a leader.

“With a career in retail, every day I have the privilege to motivate and mentor my team to achieve their own personal goals whilst fostering and encouraging a positive team culture by working together to achieve our company’s goals.”

Trevor Evans, CEO, NRA, said the role of a retailer has evolved, and these future leaders have demonstrated that, to compete and prosper in this challenging market, you have to be savvy in all areas.

“These young retailers have well and truly broken the stereotype that working in retail is something you do for pocket money when you’re young. They are proving that the retail industry can fulfil Gen Y’s desire for a dynamic and exciting career,” Evans said.

“Joanna’s passion for providing an extraordinary customer experience in her store made her a stand out competitor in this year’s competition.

“Her drive to help grow the Target brand and inspire her colleagues, will ensure she is a strong role model with a promising retail career ahead.”

The Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony was led by keynote Craig King, CEO of the General Pants Group and former Australia’s Got Talent semi finalist, Jonny Drama also known as Dr Rhythm facilitated the evening.
