Tourist hotspot gets first ever supermarket

Hamilton-Island-aerial,medium_large.1438829797Metcash-owned grocery chain, IGA, has opened the first ever supermarket on Hamilton Island.

The new supermarket will offer local and fresh produce, a traditional deli with fresh seafood, independent big brands.

IGA called it a landmark move for the Island, asserting the store will offer greater convenience and ease for local shoppers and tourists.

“We are delighted to bring the new look IGA store format to Hamilton Island and we’re looking forward to carrying a range of products, service and great prices to locals and holiday goers alike,” said IGA Hamilton Island store manager Brett Rhod.

“We’re proud to champion the local produce the area is famed for, along with the brands and products customers know and love.”

Rhod said the store offers a competitive and tailored offer for locals and visitors including an extended range of gourmet and extensive health and gluten free food range.

The store also offers IGA’s Price Match Promise, which matches hundreds of everyday items such as breakfast cereals, coffee and pasta to Australia’s major supermarket chains.

Hamilton Island CEO Glenn Bourke said, “The Hamilton Island community is thrilled about the opening of our new IGA supermarket which will be an excellent new offering not just for our permanent residents, but our many hotel and holiday home guests.”

The new store has a policy of using recyclable bags and cardboard boxes instead of single use lightweight plastic bags in order to reduce the environmental footprint on the island.

Metcash recently appointed former British supermarket giant Tesco executive Jeff Adams as its next CEO.

Adams will step in to the four-year-role in December, succeeding Ian Morrice who in June announced his intention to retire after five years as chief executive, Metcash.
