MissChu shuts UK arm

misschu bondiVietnamese street food group, MissChu, which was placed in voluntary administration last month after the business collapsed under $4 million in debts, has closed its London store, with the international license now for sale.

Last week the Sydney operations of the business, including six MissChu branded tuckshops and a commercial kitchen, were put up for sale by administrators, KordaMentha.

MissChu, founded by Nahji Chu, began as a catering business in 2007 and has since expanded into retail tuckshops in Sydney and Melbourne. The business opened its first international store in London in 2013.

At the time of administration the company stated the Melbourne and London businesses were unaffected, however, Chu has since admitted the move to expand overseas “allowed the business to be mismanaged and therefore accumulated some debt”.

“I didn’t grow too quickly. I grew in the wrong direction at the last minute, London was a mistake but Sydney and Melbourne are still thriving,” Chu said.

Since the chain’s collapse Chu has been appealing to customers via social media to support the business. Chu confirmed earlier this week on Facebook that the London store has now been closed.

“Thank you for all your continued support everyone. Your patronage over these past few weeks in Sydney has meant that the business will not be put into liquidation (assets sold and shut down for good),” Chu said.

“It means that there is a business case for MissChu to stay open and likely to be sold to an operator the Administrator deems best to run it and has the best outcome for the creditors. The London store has been shut down for good. The international license will be sold to the best bidder.”

Chu has previously vowed to stay with the business under any new ownership.
