Groupon secures Australian name

Groupon Australia will now operate under the groupon.com.au domain.

The company has been in a dispute with another party who acquired the Groupon.com.au domain name prior to the US company’s arrival in the market. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

“This is an exciting day for Groupon Australia,” said Groupon Australia CEO, Patrick Schmidt.

Groupon Inc, through a subsidiary, began operating in Australia under the brand Stardeals in February. The Stardeals brand will be discontinued, with all traffic redirected to groupon.com.au. Groupon Australia today offers deals in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, with premium deals also being offered in Melbourne and Sydney.

“Naturally we’re communicating the change in brand to all our customers and merchant partners and reinforcing our commitment to deliver the very best deals and unmatched levels of customer and merchant support,” added Schmidt.

Using the principles of collective buying, Groupon negotiates unprecedented discounts with only the highest quality businesses. Groupon subscribers get daily emails alerting them to the deals. The deals are activated only when a minimum number of people agree to buy, encouraging subscribers to share the promotion with family and friends.

Groupon, launched in November 2008 in Chicago, features adaily deal on the best stuff to do, eat, see and buy in 43 countries around the world. Groupon uses collective buying power to offer huge discounts and provide a win-win for business and consumers, delivering more than 1000 daily deals globally.
