More dollars move online

More than one third of Australians intend to purchase Christmas presents online this year, a Newspoll survey has found.

Based on estimates provided by the Newspoll survey respondents, Australians collectively intend to spend over $2 billion dollars on gifts online this Christmas.

Generation Y is leading the online shopping revolution with 51 per cent of those aged 18 to 34 intending to purchase gifts online this Christmas.

But Baby Boomers were not far behind, with 32 per cent of those aged 50 to 64 intending to shop online. The study was commissioned by Australia’s fastest growing shopper rewards portal, BucksBack.com.au.

The Newspoll study found that 53 per cent of Australians with children intend to shop for Christmas presents online compared to 28 per cent of those with no children.

Results also suggest that the higher a person’s income the more likely they are to shop online for Christmas presents.

Almost 60 per cent of Australians earning $90,000 or more a year say they are likely shop online, against 37 per cent of those earning $50,000 to $89,999 a year and 17 per cent of those earning less than $50,000 a year.

Of those surveyed by Newspoll, 38 per cent intend to spend between $100 and $299 online on Christmas presents while the next largest segment at 20 per cent intend to spend between $500 and $599.
