You can find almost anything in Melbourne’s laneways, but for the next six months there is one thing you won’t see in one of them: cigarettes.

The city’s Causeway Lane has been chosen as the site for a six month trial smoking ban that begins on October 1.

The idea came about after the Australian Medical Association asked Melbourne City Council to consider the trial in an alfresco dining area.

The Causeway – which runs between the CBD’s Bourke St and Little Collins St – is one of many laneways of unique retailers, bars, restaurants and cafes that are promoted by the council’s tourism website.

The move comes as the Victorian government considers banning smoking outside pubs, clubs and bars.

Health Minister, David Davis, has said the government is assessing information on outdoor areas and will make further announcements in the coming months.

The state government will also introduce legislation in the next few months to ban smoking at children’s playgrounds, skate parks and children’s sporting events.
