Online food delivery platform, Delivery Hero, has used data from its users to rank the favourite takeaway cuisines of each Australian city.

More than in any other Australian capital city, Melbournians’ palates have a thing for pizza.

Sydneysiders are also fond of pizza, however, are more likely to alternate it with Thai food.

In Melbourne, pizza ranks first in 93 per cent of the city’s districts, with only Southern Melbourne residents choosing Thai as their go to takeaway cuisine.

Pizza orders have made up 50 per cent total takeaway orders in the Victorian capital, this year, with Margherita the most ordered pizza.

Indian cuisine presents a well balanced spread across Melbourne sitting at either second or third in each district, while Thai cuisine shows up in the top three of half of Melbourne’s districts, or 40 per cent.

Pizza also leads in half of Sydney’s districts, gathering a total of 32 per cent of all takeaway orders placed. Chicken Supreme Pizza is most ordered pizza.

Sydney residents differentiate themselves from the rest of the country with their taste for Thai food, with Pad Thai coming up as the most ordered takeaway dish in the NSW capital.

Thai cuisine accounts for 30 per cent of Sydney takeaway orders, coming top in a third of the city’s districts, including the Eastern Suburbs, Central West, Inner West, Lower North Shore and the Fairfield-Liverpool areas.

A favourite in the 1980s, Chinese cuisine diversifies the takeaway scene in Sydney, coming in with 15 per cent of total takeaway orders in the city.

Similarly, Indian cuisine presents a well balanced spread among Sydney’s districts, gathering 12 per cent of takeaway orders – favourite takeaway of the Central Coast and the Outer South Western area.

CJ Foo, CEO of Delivery Hero Australia, said pizza has a long history of being the go to takeaway of Australian families.

“Despite the fact that we have more Indian than pizza restaurants in Melbourne network, pizza remains the cuisine most ordered through out the city. This shows the love Melbournians have for this Italian star,” said Foo.

“Sydney is a great example of the Australian takeaway scene, with traditional dishes being slowly but surely challenged by rising exotic cuisines.”
