Daylight jewellery heist at Westfield

CCTV, Shoplifting, security, theft, stealing, robbery, shrinkage, cameraNSW police are appealing for witnesses after a brazen $100,000 jewellery heist in broad daylight at a Sydney shopping centre.

A 55 year old jewellery wholesaler had parked his car in the level four Westfield car park in Hurstville about 3.30pm on Tuesday and unloaded a suitcase full of jewellery “for an impromptu meeting with a retailer”, said detective inspector, Paul Simpkins.

When he returned to his vehicle, the man noticed a silver Mitsubishi Magna double parked near his car.

Inside the car was a male driver of Asian appearance, and two children in the backseat.

He then heard yelling behind him and turned to see two men running at him. One of the men punched his left arm, causing the suitcase to drop.

The thief picked up the suitcase, which contained rings, pendants, bracelets and necklaces imported from Italy, before both men jumped into silver car and sped away.

Police want to speak to two men, described as being of Asian appearance aged between 35 and 45 and about 170cm tall.

They also want to speak to a woman spotted near the scene. She is described as wearing a “very distinctive blue scarf”, a black shirt and blue jeans, Simpkins said.

“We don’t have many witnesses to this matter, that’s why we’re seeking the assistance of this female,” he said.

The victim has told police he does not know the offenders.

Investigations are continuing as to whether it was a targeted or opportunistic attack.

Simpkins said both the victim and the retailer are cooperating with police inquiries.

Police warned anyone purchasing jewellery to be careful of its origins. Receiving stolen jewellery carries a maximum jail sentence of 10 years in NSW, the inspector said.
