Luxury body and skincare brand Aesop has just unveiled its world-first fragrance experience, The Sensorium, within its Sydney flagship store. Inside, customers are invited to experience the luxury brand’s seven eaux de parfum. In an infusion chamber known as The Armoire, they can even have their coat or scarf imbued with their chosen scent. And at the orientation table, they can listen to interviews with perfumer Barnabé Fillion, who created several of the fragrances. The cocoon-like Se
ike Sensorium was designed in partnership with internationally renowned architects Snøhetta and features gracefully curved walls, candles sitting in wall cavities and irregular arched entrances.
Snøhetta also designed the Sydney flagship itself, Aesop’s largest retail space, which opened in 2019 and was inspired by rocky coastlines. The 250sqm store is lined with granite; vertical grooves have been cut into the walls to create rows of shelving, singular silver basins, and cabinetry, where customers can test products the way they would in their own bathrooms.
Aesop first launched in 1987 in Melbourne and has grown to become a cult skincare brand, as well-known for its high-quality formulations as for its unique store designs around the world. The Tokyo store was inspired by the local riverside landscape, while the Upper West Side store in New York is located within an old family-run drycleaner, featuring the preserved signage of the previous business.
