Australian property group Mirvac plans to close Brisbane’s Toombul Shopping Centre following extensive flood damage earlier this year.

A Mirvac spokesperson said the developer had ‘undertaken extensive assessments’ of the flood damage to the precinct and said it was “impractical and undesirable” to reinstate it to its original condition.

“Following careful consideration of a number of factors including the extent of damage, the risk of future flooding, and the importance of certainty for our partners, we have made the difficult decision not to reinstate the centre to how it was prior to the flooding damage,” the mall said on its Facebook page.

A document sent to retailers explained that there were significant issues with the electricity, fire, air-conditioning systems, lifts and escalators of the centre. The group is yet to make a decision on the future plans for the site as they do not have a timeline to resolve this.

“All areas of the centre are not fit for occupation under the relevant building codes and reinstatement of services to allow ‘upstairs’ to trade independently of the ground level is not possible at this time,” reported ABC news.
