Vicinity Centres has teamed up with energy services ecosystem EnelX on a pilot onsite battery storage systems agreement.

The joint venture will expand on Vicinity’s Integrated Energy Strategy and maximise its energy production and reduce its reliance on the electricity grids.

The batteries – operated and optimised by EnelX – will store excess renewable energy when spot electricity prices are low or negative.

Justin Mills, chief information & innovation officer at Vicinity Centres, said the commercial collaboration will help deliver energy storage systems that complement existing solar power installations.

“The batteries will support green energy use and the electricity grid. Vicinity’s Energy Team has worked tirelessly on this trial and our integrated energy strategy over the past five years.”

Vicinity will manage the engineering, procurement, infrastructure and construction processes of the project.

Matt Schultz, head of energy storage at Enel X Australia, said the project will help Vicinity reduce costs by “optimising the batteries charge and discharge strategy” with proprietary optimisation software.

Project work has commenced at Vicinity’s Broadmeadows Central Centre in Victoria and at Lake Haven Centre in NSW and is due for completion by the middle of this year.
