Property developer Tipalea says construction of its Glebe Hill Village retail centre in metropolitan Hobart is now complete.

The centre spans 5900sqm and includes 18 specialty retailers. Anchored by Coles, it has 260 car parks.

The first new shopping centre to open in Tasmania in 10 years, the centre features smart technology services such as wireless phone charging, free Wi-Fi, smart bathrooms, smart metering systems, EV chargers and solar panels.

A Glebe Village app allows users to pre-order food, book appointment for services at the centre and access real-time data on how the busy centre is and learn more about its environmental performance.

Scott Spanton, CEO of Tipalea Partners, said the project delivered a significant boost to local employment at a critical time, generating more than 1000 jobs throughout Covid and into the recovery phase.

Doug Chipman, Clarence City Council Mayor, described the centre as a “significant asset” for the local community and said it would help meet the community’s needs in a booming area.

“The village will provide a significant benefit for Clarence Plains, which we predict will grow to a population of more than 20,000 people and become a satellite city in its own right in another 10 years’ time.”
