Adelaide plans $250m retail hub on city fringe


A $250 million development plan is set to transform a 3.6ha Adelaide plot into a modern food and retail-oriented mixed-use centre featuring apartments and a piazza-style market square.

The project, dubbed ‘Locale’, will be built on the former site of furniture store Le Cornu which ended operations in 2016. The land was then sold to German hypermarket Kaufland which planned to build a flagship store there before cancelling plans to launch in Australia in 2020.

The development, located 3.5km southwest of Adelaide’s CBD on the Anzac Highway, is being led by South Australia’s Commercial Retail Group, which owns and operates Frewville and Pasadena Foodland, with national property developer Peet Limited and local developer Buildtec. It includes open-air cafes, specialist retailers, 199 high-end apartments and 106 townhouses, short-stay apartments for tourism, along with an Urban Green School where students will be taught about sustainable food production practices and an urban farm.

A Market Square will feature a full-line supermarket, open-air cafes, eateries and specialist retailers including a flower store and a wellbeing centre and day spa.

Spero Chapley, director at Commercial Retail Group, described the space as a truly dynamic, inclusive community where people can live, work, socialise, shop, eat, learn and connect.

“South Australia is known for its exceptional food and beverage experiences and the unique offerings of the rooftop Urban Farm and the high-quality eateries serving its locally grown produce will no doubt be a drawcard for local, interstate and international visitors.”

Stage 1 construction is expected to begin early next year with residents expected to move in by late 2025.
