UnionPay’s Australian push

unionpayUnionPay has launched a push to help Australian retailers reach Chinese consumers visiting the country.

Visitors from China make up a large portion of Australia’s tourism economy, and are expected to spend up to $9 billion in Australia by 2020.

UnionPay  has organised for the distribution of 300 UnionPay logo stickers to stores and restaurants in Sydney’s CBD in an effort to help Australian businesses reach the growing market.

According to the Chinese payments provider, by displaying the UnionPay logo, retailers can increase their sales up to 20 times. The average UnionPay transaction size is $800, with UnionPay customers spending more per transaction than of any other international card.

Chinese visitors can only bring a maximum of US$5000 cash with them per trip, however, UnionPay gives Chinese tourists unlimited spending potential on their card. In 2012, the biggest single transaction recorded by a UnionPay cardholder was A$560,000.

This campaign coincides with news that growth of Chinese visitors to Australia is expected to reach 1 million in 2020.

To further push this initiative, UnionPay is running a competition inviting retailers to share a photo of their displayed sticker on social media for the chance to win a free listing on the official UnionPay website.

By uploading a photo onto their social media channels with the hashtag #UnionPayAU, retailers will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win.
