Fish Market braces for Christmas rush

seafoodFor twenty years, Sydneysiders have flocked to Sydney Fish Market’s 36-Hour Seafood Marathon in preparation for their summery Christmas feasts.

This year, more than 110,000 shoppers are expected to attend the milestone 20th anniversary event on Wednesday 23 December, with oysters, sashimi and prawns high on their shopping lists.

As well as fresh seafood, shoppers will be able to purchase a Christmas turkey or ham; get advice on the best wines and beer for pairing with their meal, or pick up fresh bread, fruit, and vegetables. A selection of deli items will also be available.

Over the 36 hours of non-stop trading, consumers are expected to buy more than 660 tonnes of seafood, including 130 tonnes of prawns and 840,000 oysters.

“The people of Sydney and Christmas holiday-makers love the 36-Hour Seafood Marathon. Some families have been coming down to Sydney Fish Market every year since we held the first marathon in 1995,” said Bryan Skepper, GM, Sydney Fish Market.

“It’s become a multi-generational tradition. People, who came as children themselves, are now coming down with their own children, with grandparents in tow, to pick up tasty treats for the Christmas celebration. It’s the busiest time of year; the crowds are big and buzzing during the day, and throughout the night. We’re proud to be a part of an important Christmas tradition for so many families,” Skepper continued.

The pre-Christmas seafood bonanza will see  market stores open from 5:00am on Wednesday 23 December, trading all the way through to 5:00pm on Thursday 24 December.
