Menswear brand, Mr Simple, has opened its first store in Queensland under a new look designed by Sydney’s Prospace Design. The Byron Bay fashion retailer has eight stores across Australia and New Zealand. The latest store at the newly revamped Indooroopilly Shopping Centre in Brisbane is the first to be constructed by Prospace. The company created a statement using a 5m high slatted timber shopfront, as Mr Simple needed to “stand out from the crowd” in the newly redeveloped
mall.
“It was clear that they were not interested in blending in with the crowd with their store design,” said Ben Perman, design lead at Prospace Design.
“They wanted to make a strong statement, particularly with the shopfront design, in a mall that otherwise predominantly features full height glazed shopfronts.”
This sense of theatre is repeated inside the store along the back feature wall, as Perman notes: “they wanted a fresh, clean, minimal materials palette, and for there to be a visual connection between the design language of the shopfront and inside the store”.
When it comes to visual merchandising, Mr Simple’s unique style required statement pieces of furniture to be used for the brand to be able to display full outfits and ranges.
This is done by using oversized tables on steel frames and a series of small tables.Other bespoke floor and wall fixtures are designed from steel and plywood to give the brand flexibility in product display.
The fitting rooms are painted in pastel blue to provide relief from the otherwise neutral palette of white ceilings and walls with a grey colour dip.
“For the next phase of stores, Mr Simple would like a new design approach in terms of the fixtures we designed. We will refresh the current design and move away from the feature shopfront and create something equally dynamic,” said Perman.
