The coronavirus has presented a unique opportunity to the adult toy industry as sales skyrocketed during the global pandemic, according to Randy Fox, one of Australia’s largest online retailers of sex toys and adult novelties.

Sex toy sales, in general, dwindle down after February, specifically after Valentine’s Day. However, the prospect of being in lockdown indoors for at least the foreseeable future has prompted people to stash not just essential items but also sex toys to pass their time.

As the restrictions have continued, more and more people have turned to creative measures to break the monotony and entertain themselves. Some look to learn new hobbies, pick up some old books, reconnect with their friends online and then there are couples and singles alike who explored a different aspect of intimacy – inviting adult toys in their bedroom.

Randy Fox, an online adult store in Australia has reported a significant increase of sex toys being sold on their website since the lockdown measures were introduced. Having dispatched over half a million sex toys and adult pleasure products to Australians since 2009, Randy Fox aggregated the data of shopper purchasing habits in recent months and crunched the numbers.

They noted an overall increase of 30 per cent in total sales figures from the previous month before lockdown. They also noticed a marked increase in couple adult toys being purchased. Chris Joseph, the company’s chief of operations gave comment. “We are selling almost double the amount of products for couples we usually do at this time of the year. Most people in relationships are spending more time with their partners, simply because of the nature of the lockdown. Couples are exploring adventurous and exciting ways to add more fun in their relationship and make the most of their time together. We have also noticed more phone calls too. People want advice and tips on nurturing intimacy whilst facing global pandemic uncertainty.”

Maintaining a social distance and staying indoors can be depressing, stressful and anxiety-inducing. The activities that we can do during these times are limited too. Many seem to be turning to new ways to have fun. Randy Fox also saw an increase in sales in female adult toys specifically rabbit vibrators. Many women are breaking the stigma of female masturbation and enjoying their intimacy as much as their male counterparts.

The possibility of extended isolation, social distancing and staying indoors is still on the table with continued uncertainty surrounding the response to the pandemic. The situation has provided unique opportunities in certain industries, particularly online business. The long term effects are still to be seen.
