Retail sales continue positive performance

Inside Retail presents the Australian Retail Index.

The index gives a quick overview of retail statistics in four key categories; fashion and accessories, furniture and homewares, sporting and recreational, and other.

Key retail statistics are shown weekly, with yearly comparisons available.

The good news keeps coming for retailers in the lead up to Christmas. Overall sales have increased by two per cent on the back of the previous weeks positive gain of 4.7 per cent.

This result is an improvement on the same week last year where sales changed by only 0.83 per cent.

The furniture and homewares sector was the stand out performer with a gain of over 12 per cent, recovering some of the decline experienced the week prior.

In a surprising result, fashion and accessories sales fell by just under five per cent, even with the expected impact of the Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne.

It’s interesting to note that this is a similar result to that recorded in the same week last year, where sales fell by 4.11 per cent.
