The post-Christmas trading hangover appears to be continuing for retailers across the country with a 14.57 per cent decline in sales performance in the last week. Western Australia showed the only positive gains last week, while all other states recorded double digit negative results. The furniture and homewares sector was hardest hit, again with Western Australia being cushioned from most of the negative performance.
This week has seen a marked change in the way consumers are paying for their purchases. Layby purchases have increased substantially after the Christmas trading period, suggesting that consumers may have emptied their wallets of cash and are looking to take advantage of layby as a way to secure some post-Christmas bargains.
