Going nuts on design

unnamed-10Nuts Galore has launched an innovative new store concept in the Fresh Food Market of Sydney’s Macquarie Centre.

The 20sqm kiosk was conceived by the creative team at Design Portfolio, who specialise in retail design.

Nuts Galore was founded in 1989 in Sydney and has grown to nine stores, seven in Sydney and two on the Gold Coast.

Adam Burns, creative director at Design Portfolio, told Inside Retail PREMIUM, the concept is based on a loose interpretation of the design of a nut.

“It’s got a hard outer protective shell, which is made up of recycled timber and brick, andthen the inside of that is yellow, as a nut is,” he said.

“Because there are so many products, the other design feature we added is a word play on how hard it is to choose, and to encourage customers to linger.”

Timber posts are lettered with names of nuts like a scrabble board to encourage interaction alongside glass displays.

A palate of rustic and warm materials were chosen to complement and highlight the healthy aspect of the products on display, said Burns.

“The design brief was broad in the sense that the existing kiosk design had been around for many years and I don’t think much had changed in that period, so they wanted something a bit more up to date that would suit the new food hall environment.”

Operational changes were made to improve the layout and display cabinet design and a more prominent coffee bench was introduced, along with a new ticketing system and signage.

Burns said the Macquarie Centre kiosk is designed with the view of rolling it out to other locations, although a store rollout has not yet been confirmed by Nuts Galore.
