Car crashes into Sydney chemist

policeA teenage girl is dead after a car ploughed into a shop in Sydney’s south – the exact spot where another young woman was killed seven years ago.

The 16 year old was reportedly waiting for a bus on the corner of Railway Parade and Montgomery Street, Kogarah, about 11.30am on Monday when a 4WD veered off the road and smashed through the glass shopfront of O’Reilly & Daly Chemists.

The girl, believed to be a Kogarah High School student, was trapped under the car and died at the scene, police said.

Two other people were injured.

A man in his 60s, who was a customer at the chemist, was pinned underneath a cabinet inside the shop.

A 10 tonne winch was used to lift the car away from the cabinet so the man could be taken to hospital.

A female employee at the chemist was injured by glass.

The female driver was taken to St George hospital suffering shock. She had a passenger and two young children in the car, who were unhurt.

The accident occurred in the same spot where 20 year old fashion student, Emma Hansen, died while waiting at a bus stop next to the chemist in 2007.

Eleven other people were injured in that accident, when a car being driven by a learner driver clipped the kerb, mounted the gutter and ploughed into the bus queue.

Kogarah Chamber of Commerce president, Megan Barker, says the intersection where both crashes occurred is confusing for drivers.

“This is a repeat of seven years ago, when a car lost control and hit the bus stop,” she told AAP.

Police are appealing for witnesses to Monday’s crash to come forward.

The driver, who will undergo mandatory testing, has yet to be interviewed by police.
