Free People makes local debut

freepeopleUS-based fashion label, Free People, opened its first Australian pop up shop in Sydney over the weekend, fuelling talk it may be on its way to Australia permanently.

The three day pop up, which ran over the weekend, was located above the Come As You Are Boutique along Paddington’s Oxford St.

Known for its bohemian inspired fashion, the pop up featured a limited range of items as well as an Australian exclusive capsule collection.

The move to open a pop up shop in Australia follows the likes of other international fashion retailers such as Uniqlo, which opened a temporary site in Melbourne prior to its permanent debut at Emporium in April.

The Japanese retailer is currently trading in Sydney with a pop up ahead of the opening of its second local store, which is due to open in the city’s Mid City Centre later this year.

Owned by Urban Outfitters, Free People first launched as a bricks and mortar store in US city, Philadelphia, in the early 1970s.

It was soon converted and expanded under the name Urban Outfitters, with the Free People label sold only wholesale.

Earlier this year in April Free People opened its first bricks and mortar retail concept in Hong Kong.

The Free People store in store concept opened in partnership with fashion retail precinct, Lab Concept.
