Fashion sales slide while overall sales lift

Inside Retail presents the Australian Retail Index.

The index gives a quick overview of retail statistics in four key categories; fashion and accessories, furniture and homewares, sporting and recreational, and other.

Key retail statistics are shown weekly, with yearly comparisons available.

It seems the fashion and accessories vertical is struggling to put two consecutive weeks of growth together, with figures showing a decline in sales this week of 10.42 per cent.

Last week saw this vertical move up by almost the same amount at 10.28 per cent.

Retailers will be wondering what lies around the corner for this traditionally volatile sector.

Overall sales we positive with growth of 2.036 per cent, regaining some of the ground lost last week.

The big winner was furniture and homewares with a gain of 7.8 per cent.

As for the other verticals, these gains effectively offset the losses seen the previous week.
