Shopify deal could see eBay add thousands of sellers

EBay Australia has partnered with popular e-commerce platform, Shopify, to make it easier for users to list and sell their products through the online marketplace.

The integration is expected dramatically increase eBay’s seller network and product offering at a time when rival Amazon is adding new product categories on an almost weekly basis.

“eBay was built on the notion of partnerships, whether that’s with retailers, service providers or platforms,” eBay’s director of commercial partnerships Mark Mansour said.

“Our goal has always been to partner, not compete, and to provide our buyers and sellers the best with the experience.

“Partnering with Shopify means we’re able to bring more great products to eBay buyers, while offering Shopify merchants the chance to build their brands at scale by tapping into our unparalleled marketplace.”

The partnership also provides Shopify merchants access to eBay’s 11 million Australian monthly unique browsers and simplifies some of the challenges of selling through a marketplace, namely syncing product listings with information from the website, such as product title, description, item specifics, price and quantity.

Customer orders will be fulfilled via Shopify, allowing merchants to complete orders in one location.

Shopify already allows its merchants to sell via Facebook Marketplace and Amazon, and adding eBay to that mix creates a more even playing field across the various marketplaces available for customers.

Editor’s note: This story was updated at 1430 AEST on 25/10/2018 to reflect the fact that eBay shoppers will have access to “thousands” of Shopify sellers, not “hundreds of thousands” as a press release initially stated.
