Coles is reportedly planning to cut its range by at least 10 per cent.

Coles reportedly plans to cut its range by at least 10 per cent to boost sales and achieve higher profit.

According to the Australian Financial Review, the supermarket chain has been working with consultants at Bain over past months. The company has not specified the type of products that will be affected.

A Coles spokesperson told the AFR the retailer was working with suppliers to improve the value, quality, range and availability of its products.

Regular customer research and discussions with suppliers helped the company change the range of products stocked to remove duplication and make it easier for shoppers to find the right items, she added.

The decision to reduce in-store range comes as Coalition and Labor blamed major supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths for higher prices, the AFR stated.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is also investigating how much power these companies have in setting prices and how they use that power in dealing with suppliers.
