Coles new-gen stores open

Coles southlandThree new generation Coles supermarkets open today at Bondi Westfield, Broadway, and Balgowlah, all in Sydney.

The openings represent more than $15 million dollars worth of investment to develop the customer experience.

Incorporating insights gathered from the Coles innovation trial store in Southland, Victoria, the three redesigned Coles stores are the next phase of the chain’s store renewal plan.

Simon McDowell, Coles marketing and store development director, said the success of Coles now and into the future is dependent upon remaining focused on customers and creating an outstanding experience.

“It is fantastic to be able to reveal three of our most innovative stores in Sydney – just in time for Christmas. These stores offer customers not just a supermarket, but the ultimate foodie destination,” McDowell said.

New features

More than 1800 new products are available across the three locations, with each of the new look stores featuring a Coles Kitchen that allows shoppers to select from a range of freshly prepared takeaway options, such as freshly prepared sandwiches and baguettes, sushi, and hot and cold pizzas, and pies.

Barista made Lavazza coffee is available at the Coles bakery, which now has an expanded range of artisan breads. The stores will also have new Coles patisseries, with cakes and pastries sourced from Marrickville-based bakery, Manna from Heaven. Coles Broadway also houses a fresh juice bar.

A new continental delicatessen includes a floor to ceiling glass cheese wall, new ranges of locally made fresh pasta, gourmet deli lines, and specialty cheeses and cured meats sliced on request.

Redesigned market style fresh produce sections in each store will display fruit and vegetables on ice, with a new loose nut unit.

The fresh meat departments include a dry-ageing cabinet and marinating and crumbing service, while Coles Simply Healthy Living sections are available in the grocery aisles where customers can locate ‘Free From’ and Coles Simply products in one place.

An extended range of 340 grocery products, including Peanut Butter, Nutella, and ready to eat meals, will be available in Coles Bondi Westfield as part of an upgraded Kosher food shop.

McDowell says the new stores are also innovative beyond just what they sell.

“We have a comprehensive sustainability plan to operate smarter, ‘greener’ stores. All three stores incorporate back of house and customer recycling programs, and food rescue partnerships with SecondBite and the Salvation Army.

“Through energy efficiencies including LED lighting and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, we are taking responsibility and playing our part to Help Australia Grow,” he said.

For greater convenience, self service checkouts have been introduced to make quick trips a breeze. Customers will also have access to a recipe kiosk and free wi-fi.

Coles Bondi Westfield, Broadway and Balgowlah will all open at 9am on Wednesday 4th December.
