Aldi Australia has begun construction of its 32,000sqm distribution centre in South Australia, as the discount supermarket retailer prepares to open up 50 stores across the state.

Aldi confirmed in October 2014 it would invest $700 million to build two distribution centres and as many as 120 stores across both SA and Western Australia.

The supermarket group appointed SA-based construction company, Badge, to oversee the development of the DC late last year, with it to be located in Adelaide’s Regency Park.

The site is expected to cost around $70 million and create about 150 jobs for the state, with constructed expected to take place over the next eight months.

Viktor Jakupec, Aldi MD – South Australia, said the new DC will act as the hub of Aldi’s South Australian region and will have the ability to service up to 50 stores.

Jakupec was appointed head of the chain’s South Australian division in 2013, having previously led the company’s expansion into Queensland in 2004, where it now has around 75 stores across the state.

Construction has also begun on one of its first retail stores to open in SA at Seaford Heights, with it expected to be completed in around six months.

Development applications have also been lodged for 16 an additional store locations.

The first stores are expected to open in early 2016, and around $300 million will continue to be invested in the state over the next few years.

Up to 50 stores are planned for South Australia with potential locations including Seaford Heights, Kilburn, Parafield Gardens, Blakeview, Hallett Cove, Woodcroft, Gilles Plains, Salisbury, Modbury, St Agnes, and Noarlunga.

Jakupec said the commencement of store construction is an exciting step forward.

“We’re finding South Australian shoppers are becoming more and more curious about what we have to offer,” he said.
Aldi has around 319 stores across Victoria, NSW, and Queensland.
