Ebay Australia launches authenticity guarantee for designer handbags

Online shopping site Ebay has expanded its authenticity guarantee in the Australian market to include new and used luxury handbags, after launching the program for sneakers last year.

The service covers 16 designer brands including Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada, valued at $350 or more. According to Ebay, eligible items are authenticated by a blue tick on the listing and once bought, are verified at Ebay’s Sydney authentication facility – currently at no extra cost to the buyer or seller.

“With a handbag listed every two minutes on ebay.com.au and Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada among our top brands purchased, luxury handbags have never been more in demand – whether as an investment purchase or [by consumers] looking for a rare vintage find,” said Brooke Eichhorn, Ebay Australia’s head of luxury.

“The biggest trend we’re seeing is a Y2K resurgence, as well as double-digit growth in brands like Fendi, Gucci and Saint Laurent during the past two years.”

As Aussies seek more luxury items online, counterfeit handbags have become a hot issue. The Ebay handbag authentication system follows a strict data-driven process, where the items are made sure of in many aspects including quality, materials, brand logos, hardware and stitching, by the authenticators.

Ebay said the luxury handbags will be shipped with an NFC card, which contains an encrypted digital authentication certificate, and buyers can scan it to check the information. The card cannot be reused or replicated.

“Buying pre-loved items has become increasingly popular – a trend driven by Gen Z and Millennials who are embracing sustainability,” added Eichhorn.

“With the majority of luxury handbags sold on Ebay second hand, it’s a great way to give something another life and save it from landfill. And when you’re ready to re-sell your handbag, it’s never been easier. Scan your authentication card with your phone and you can re-list the item on Ebay in just a few clicks.”

In addition, Ebay will become an official partner of Afterpay Australian Fashion Week where it will present its authenticity guarantee program from May 9-14. The marketplace will also offer a 10 per cent discount offer for high-end handbags during Fashion Week.
