We chat with Sandradee Makejev, CEO and founder of online retailer St Frock about inspiring female business owners, motivating staff and why she gave up indoor cycling in the morning. What’s your morning routine? I used to do an indoor cycle class, kill myself getting ready quickly and take 15 vitamins before arriving at work with a coffee in hand. But now I find it’s way more calming to throw open my apartment doors for fresh air, listen to my favourite playlist up loud and sing
and sing in the shower, followed by a coffee on my balcony.
Here is some of the most business advice I’ve ever received:
Back what works by continually testing and learning.Always be resourceful and creative without over-spending.Don’t ever forget what the customer actually expects from your brand.Lead by example and from within the team. It’s a partnership.
I’m inspired by what a lot of self-funded female founders are doing, like Olivia Carr from Shhh Silk. With every customer purchase, Shhh Silk donates a specially designed sleeping mask to homeless charities across Australia and the US.
Julie Mathers from Flora & Fauna has also inspired me to make changes in my own company.
Here are my top three tips on keeping staff happy at work:
Celebrate their birthdays and work anniversaries. I love seeing the happiness this brings.Find out what’s important for their happiness and growth.Take time to get to know them personally and eat lunch with different parts of the company daily.
One of my business heroes is Kate Morris, founder of Adore Beauty because when I walk away from a conversation with her, I think, “Fuck, she is so smart; she is from another planet and I have to google some of the stuff she said.”
Here’s what I’m listening to and reading: My playlist on Youtube reads like it’s on
‘vision, motivation, mindset and beast’ mode.
I’m reading Leaders Eat Last and I love reading positive and interesting stories on LinkedIn about what people in business are doing. I’m always listening to everyone I meet along the way’s stories, because everyone has an amazing story to tell if you are willing to listen.
