David Jones has celebrated its first flower show in Melbourne, which features 12 zero-waste installations crafted by renowned activist, eco-warrior and floral artist Joost Bakker.

The show, which takes place in David Jones Bourke Street Flagship, features flora throughout the store concept and represents “forms of nature”, with different species on display sourced from suppliers, growers, and producers of Bakker’s farm.

“I want to get people excited about the beauty that surrounds us, to understand and feel like they’re immersed in an ecosystem where every single element is connected,” said Joost Bakker.

“I believe we need to transition into a world where we generate no waste and I think the David Jones Flower Show will be a great example of how future floral installations can be designed.”

David Jones reported after the show, all aspects of the projects will be recycled, with tree trunks, organic garbage, insects, and vegetation being replanted and composted on Bakker’s land alongside installation equipment, the majority of which came from his existing collection. In addition, tulip bulbs will be given to employees and customers for replanting the following season, and fish will be returned to their ethical breeding program.

The David Jones flower show, which has an 82-year history, was first introduced in the 1920s. The brand aims to mark the arrival of Spring by gathering flowers from gardens and displaying them on counters.

The Flower Show by Bakker is available until October 23 and finishes with the release of bees onto the store’s rooftop.
