Steve Jobs famously once said: “Packaging can be theatre, it can create a story.” Choosing the right packaging solution for your business is a big decision and something that requires a lot of thought and planning. It’s an integral part of the customer experience and an inherent part of your brand.
Winc, one of Australia’s largest B2B workplace supplies companies, delivers 45,000 Winc boxes to customers around the country every business day. With such a large distribution and logistics network, Winc knows a thing or two about great packaging.
We spoke with Zoe Spyrakis, category manager for packaging at Winc on her top tips to help you choose the best packaging solutions for your business.
Tip 1: Ensure packaging is fit for purpose
Selecting packaging that performs is imperative to creating a positive end-to-end customer experience. A well-packaged order can leave a lasting impression, reduce returns and even increase sales. “For valuable contents, use packaging made of appropriate protective materials to maintain product integrity and minimise the risk of damage during transit. For added security on high-value items, consider whether your packaging solutions effectively conceal products and labels,” says Spyrakis.
Tip 2: Share your values
Sustainable packaging options have come a long way over the years. There are now many solutions focused on reducing the environmental impact of doing business which also perform well.
“If your business has ESG targets, modifying your packaging solutions can significantly contribute to achieving your sustainability goals. Look for options that are recyclable, biodegradable, compostable or made from post-consumer waste. But don’t just think about the materials your packaging is made from. Make sure your sizing is optimised to help minimise delivery-related carbon emissions and packaging waste.
“Also, think about the other essentials you need to run your warehouse, distribution centre or retail outlets. Look for other ways to reduce waste, like more efficient recyclable void fill, paper rather than acrylic tape or even simple steps like switching to packaging knives made from recycled materials,” suggests Spyrakis.
Tip 3: Select the right packaging supplier
Spyrakis recommends considering the ethical practices and commitment to social responsibility of your supplier base. “Look for partners who prioritise ethical sourcing, transparency, and actively work to combat modern slavery in their supply chains. This not only reinforces your commitment to being a good corporate citizen but also aligns with and supports your brand’s values.
“Winc has done a lot of work optimising the way we make our deliveries to our customers. Much of what we use in our own warehouses is reflected in the range we offer our customers. It really is tried and tested to last the distance,” says Spyrakis.
