JB Hi-Fi’s net income grew in the half year ended December 31, thanks to higher sales bolstered by Black Friday and Boxing Day promotions.
The consumer electronics retailer’s net income climbed 8 per cent year over year to $285.4 million as sales jumped 9.8 per cent to $5.67 billion.
JB Hi-Fi Australia’s sales rose 7.2 per cent to $3.88 billion, with comparable sales up 7.2 per cent. The Australian segment saw mobile phones, small appliances, computers, televisions, and cameras as key categories. Its online sales increased 16.4 per cent to $682.7 million.
JB Hi-Fi New Zealand’s sales soared 20 per cent to NZ$202.5 million, with comparable sales rising 6.9 per cent and mobile phones, computers, cameras, audio and small appliances as key categories. Online sales surged 58.4 per cent to NZ$32.4 million.
The Good Guys’ sales improved 9.2 per cent to $1.52 billion, with comparable sales increasing 8.8 per cent, thanks to the floorcare, televisions, portable appliances, cooking and refrigeration categories. Online sales totalled $233.3 million, up 8.9 per cent.
During the period, JB HiFi completed the acquisition of a 75 per cent stake in E&S Trading Co, which offers kitchen, laundry, and bathroom products.
E&S saw sales climb 7.6 per cent to $92.3 million, fuelled by the commercial division. Comparable sales grew 7.2 per cent.
“In this challenging trading environment, marked by heightened competitor activity, our focus remained on maximising demand through delivering consistently high levels of customer service and exceptional value for our customers,” said Terry Smart, JB Hi-Fi CEO.
In a trading update for the period between January 1 and January 31, the company said JB Hi-Fi Australia’s sales increased 7.4 per cent.
JB Hi-Fi New Zealand sales swelled 20.4 per cent, while The Good Guys and E&S rose by 6.4 per cent and 8.1 per cent, respectively.
